Pain management is a fundamental aspect of nursing care, as unrelieved pain can significantly impact patients’ recovery, emotional well-being, and overall quality of life. Effective pain management involves a combination of pharmacological and non-pharmacological strategies tailored to individual patient needs (World Health Organization [WHO], 2023). Nurses, as frontline caregivers, play a critical role in assessing pain, administering appropriate interventions, and educating patients on pain management strategies (Adamu & Olayemi, 2024).
Despite advancements in pain management, studies suggest that pain remains undertreated in many healthcare settings, particularly in developing countries where resources, education, and protocols may be inadequate (Adebayo et al., 2023). Barriers to effective pain management include insufficient knowledge, misconceptions about opioid use, and inadequate assessment tools. In National Hospital, Abuja, one of Nigeria’s leading tertiary hospitals, the ability of nurses to accurately assess and implement pain management strategies is crucial in ensuring optimal patient care.
This study seeks to assess the knowledge and implementation of pain management strategies among nurses in National Hospital, Abuja, identifying gaps and recommending strategies to enhance their competence in pain management.
Pain management is often overlooked or inadequately addressed due to gaps in knowledge, misconceptions about analgesics, and poor adherence to pain assessment protocols. Studies have shown that nurses may lack sufficient training in pain management, leading to inadequate pain relief for patients, prolonged hospital stays, and decreased patient satisfaction (Eze & Akinwale, 2024).
At National Hospital, Abuja, the extent to which nurses are knowledgeable about and effectively implement pain management strategies remains unclear. Without proper knowledge and adherence to guidelines, patients may experience unnecessary suffering. This study aims to evaluate nurses' knowledge and implementation of pain management strategies, identifying areas requiring improvement in clinical training and practice.
This study will focus on registered nurses working in different departments of National Hospital, Abuja, where pain management is a key aspect of patient care. Data collection will include surveys, interviews, and clinical observations. Limitations may include self-reported bias and differences in individual pain management practices.
